The house at 620 Alma Street (now Latrobe) in Chicago’s Austin neighborhood
Mystery followed the family to Alma Street. The origin of the Sorensen children continued to raise questions. Belle took great delight in parading her daughters about in the finest clothes they could afford. Many people knew that Jennie Olsen came to live with the family after her mother had died, but where had the other children come from? The sudden appearance of a baby boy named Axel in the Sorensen home raised a number of eyebrows. Belle passed off the infant as her own, but Dr. J.B. Miller, the North Avenue physician who rented space in the upper floor of the Alma Street home, later told a curious tale to the Chicago Daily News. “A few days before the appearance of little Axel I was asked by Mrs. Sorensen to hold myself in readiness to attend her for a confinement case [a term of the time period for childbirth and the recovery period afterwards]. To me as a physician this announcement came as a surprise. When Mrs. Sorensen came to me with this statement I concealed my surprise and of course replied I would be ready to take the case.”
A few days later, someone put a note under Miller’s door advising the doctor that he was “wanted” immediately and to come at once to Belle’s bedroom. Dr. Miller recalled, “This looked peculiar to me as I had passed the evening in my office and had slept in the adjoining room but had heard no one. I hurried right over to Mrs. Sorensen’s room and there found her in bed with an infant. ‘Why doctor,’ she exclaimed: ‘Where in the world were you? I aroused the whole town trying to find you and had to get somebody else.’ There was nothing I could do but say I had been at home. I never learned with any degree of satisfaction what doctor attended the woman.”
Belle claimed that she had given birth to four children, but it struck the neighbors as very peculiar that a woman who had failed to give birth in the first 11 years of her marriage had allegedly delivered four children within the span of the next three years. One neighbor, Mrs. William Diesling, stated that she had gone to the Sorensen house one day and had found an infant crying on the couch. She asked Belle why she didn’t feed it and Belle replied that she didn’t have time to take care of it. Mrs. Diesling asked who the baby belonged to and Belle said that a relative had sent it to her to look after. The next day, the baby was gone. Belle claimed the relative had returned for it.
But was this really the case? Did the baby meet with a more tragic end? According to burial records, it was discovered that Caroline Sorensen, a three-month-old girl, died on August 24, 1896, and an infant boy named Axel passed away in April 1898. Both children exhibited
